This pair of equally pear-shaped tourmalines amounts to 31.28 carats and shows a distinct deep-red color. To find two equally colored, clean tourmalines or one tourmaline out of which two stones instead of one are cut is happening extremely rarely. Also the cut of each of the tourmalines is identical, their dimensions are the same so earrings or likewise jewelry can be crafted out of them. Usually tourmalines are cut where they show their most intense color, which is parallel to the c-axis. To cut a large table a big stone is necessary and to take as much stone as possible from a good rough a triangle shape is worthwhile due to the trigonal crystal system of tourmaline. With a pear shape the original rough must have been large but most of its flaws have been cut away, so not a triangle but a pear shape evolved. The weight of 31.28 cts. is very rare for this color because most manganese colored tourmalines are found in pegmatites with smaller rocks and debris. Today resources are the USA (California) and Pakistan/Afghanistan. Rarely from Africa comes good red material but not in these sizes and color intensity. Regarding the high demand for rubellites it is questionable whether anything will be offered on the market in this quality in the future. The combination of transparency, size, intensity of color and the same shape as a pair makes these red tourmalines an interesting investment. A color like this with these inclusions and chemistry cannot be synthesized. Therefore not only the certificate by DSEF and SSEF stands for naturalness and rarity of the stone but also visible inclusions (so called „trichites“) are a natural remnant visible under the microscope.
