This purple Tourmaline of 26.28 carats is unheated and shows a distinct deep-purple color. Its size is 23.1 x 15.3 millimeters with a height of 13.1 mm and its pear shape cut is rarely found in tourmalines. Usually tourmalines are cut where they show their most intense color, which is parallel to the c-axis. To cut a large table a big stone is necessary and to take as much stone as possible from a good rough a triangle shape is worthwhile due to the trigonal crystal system of tourmaline. With a pear shape the original rough must have been large but most of its flaws have been cut away, so not a triangle but a pear shape evolved. The weight of 26.28 cts. is very rare for this color because most manganese colored tourmalines are found in pegmatites with smaller rocks and debris. Today resources are the USA (California) and Pakistan/Afghanistan. Rarely from Africa come big purple tourmalines, from Mozambique and if the chemistry fits they are heated to yield the swimming-pool blue Paraiba tourmalines. As this stone is the precursor of such a Paraiba tourmaline, it can still be heated afterwards or left as it is, unheated natural purple-colored. Some bicolor green-purple tourmalines derive from pegmatites in Africa but are of cabochon quality. The combination of transparency, size and intensity of color makes this purple tourmaline an interesting investment. A color like this with these inclusions and chemistry cannot be synthesized nor received via irradiation. Therefore not only the certificate by DSEF and SSEF stands for naturalness and rarity of the stone but also visible inclusions (so called „trichites“) are a natural remnant visible under the microscope. In any case this stone could be heated and would receive a bright blue color but it has more value unheated in the future because it stands out uniquely in the gem trade. An amethyst is not able to imitate its color because of different refractive indices and different dispersion values so this sought-after color will remain important in the long future.
